Dr Oakley is a clinical rheumatologist who has a specific interest in multi-organ autoimmune disease affecting the joints. These conditions often affect the skin and require close collaboration between rheumatologists and dermatologists.
Dr Oakley is a graduate of the UNSW medical school, Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, member of the Australian Rheumatology Association and international member of the American College of Rheumatology. He completed his Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology through the University of Newcastle whilst completing advanced training as a rheumatologist and undertaking doctoral studies in osteoarthritis at the UNSW. He worked for several years as a consultant rheumatologist at Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust (London, UK) with an honorary senior lectureship at Kings College London.
He returned to Australia in 2008 to work at the John Hunter Hospital remaining active in teaching and research and is currently a Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Newcastle.
